Formula E: ITK Engineering Provides the German Team with Software
The ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team earns two spots on the podium in Berlin using intelligent vehicle software
Rülzheim / Berlin; June – ITK Engineering and the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team had an exciting and successful race on home turf in Berlin: Formula E’s only race in Germany, held last weekend at the former Tempelhof airport, saw Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt earn one pole position, two spots on the podium, and a total of 56 points. Although battery overheating forced di Grassi to throttle his speed in Saturday’s race, he still managed to finish in second place. Ideal collaboration between the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team and its partners, including ITK Engineering, both in developing the race car and during the race itself, enabled the team to continue its winning streak this season: Di Grassi has made it onto the podium twice, while Abt’s fourth place was his best finish of the season so far.
ITK Engineering makes vehicles intelligent
Software is increasingly becoming the decisive factor for success across all motorsports. To win races in series such as Formula E, teams need intelligent powertrain concepts that make effective use of the energy available to them as well as perfect interplay between driver, team, and software.
This year, ITK Engineering is once again supporting the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team in the FIA Formula E as software partner and developing software for Lucas di Grassi’s and Daniel Abt’s cars together with the team. In addition to transmission-control systems, this support extends to control of the entire electrical drive train – including energy strategy and the battery management system as well as the cockpit display as a human-machine interface for visualizing details such as energy values. ITK covers the entire development cycle – from requirements analysis, development, verification and validation, and integration into the vehicle to trackside support at testing events and during races.
“We find the connection between racing and electromobility particularly exciting, since it’s a question of achieving peak performance while actively advancing pioneering innovations that are eco-friendly and emissions-free,” says Thomas Schiller, head of the Devision of Motorsport at ITK Engineering.
“I want to thank my team, who managed to fight their way to the top after difficult initial training sessions on Saturday morning. They didn’t show any of the stress that came from competing on home turf. To get two trophies, four points-winning finishes, and a pole position is a terrific result. I’m sure it will also please our parntners, who gave us such fantastic support here,” says Hans-Jürgen Abt, Managing Director of ABT Sportsline GmbH and team principal of the Formula E team.
