The challenge: Complexity, security, and compliance

Digital infrastructures are the backbone of modern hospital IT. However, complex IT systems, tedious user and access management, and the ever-present threat of cyberattacks pose enormous challenges for hospitals. A multitude of applications, each with its own identity and user management, as well as time-consuming and complex login processes, cost nursing staff and doctors valuable time that is needed for patient care. Added to this are the growing requirements for adherence to legal compliance regulations.

The renowned Robert Bosch Hospital (RBK) in Stuttgart, part of the Bosch Health Campus, also faced these challenges. The goal here was to integrate a multitude of business-critical applications – including the hospital information system, the patient portal, and the employee portal – into a single, cohesive system.

The solution: A central platform for efficient user management and state-of-the-art interoperability

To manage this complexity and create a future-proof digital foundation, a consortium consisting of Bosch Healthcare Solutions, Bosch Global Software Technologies, and ITK Engineering was commissioned to develop a customized platform solution for centralized identity and API management.

A central hub was created where all users – whether patients, employees, or external stakeholders – can authenticate and authorize themselves. During development, API management and identity management solutions were used to connect the RBK’s various applications, systems, and data streams via an API manager. The result: optimized integration that drastically reduces manual effort and costs while increasing efficiency.

The interfaces can be transparently published in a portal, allowing for precise configuration of who is permitted to access which interface and under what conditions. Access rights are managed intelligently through the identity management system. This not only enables seamless internal data exchange but also opens up opportunities for external partners to access specific data or even to make generally accessible information available. This significantly promotes digital connectivity both within and outside the hospital.
