Knorr-Bremse: App development for digital rail operations
For industry leaders such as Knorr-Bremse, ITK Engineering supports the digital transformation of rail technology with solutions that combine safety, efficiency, and user-friendliness. As an experienced partner, we develop safety-critical software and mobile applications for rail technology: from digitizing operationally critical processes such as brake testing to enable their automation, to intelligent driver assistance through digital assistance systems. We translate highly complex processes into intuitive, robust and CENELEC-compliant applications, creating powerful human-machine interfaces that are safe, efficient, and future-proof.
The challenge: Digitization and efficiency in rail freight transport
Rail freight transport is facing its biggest revolution in decades: the Digital Freight Train (DFT). Driven by key technologies such as the Digital Automatic Coupling (DAK), this development is designed to make rail transport more competitive through automation as well as make a vital contribution to European climate targets. Key functions such as automated brake testing, remote coupling control, and the monitoring of train integrity take center stage here. However, the success of the project depends heavily on the reliability of high-performance software. At the same time, operators and manufacturers are demanding mobile solutions that not only showcase new technology but also optimize existing processes in railway operations.
Main challenges in app development
Compliance with standards and cyber security: All software in the railway sector must meet the strictest integrity requirements without exception, in particular the CENELECstandards for software development as well as the growing demands of cyber security.
Process acceleration: Time-consuming manual processes, such as the brake testing of long freight trains, must be digitized and chronologically streamlined.
Operational efficiency: Train drivers require smart, mobile tools to reduce energy consumption and maximize punctuality on increasingly crowded rail networks.
The solution: Development of user-centered apps that meet CENELEC requirements
For Knorr-Bremse, ITK Engineering demonstrated its expertise in mobile software development in two projects: a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for the Digital Freight Train and an agile Proof of Concept for a Driver Assistance System (DAS).
Human-machine interface (HMI) for the Digital Freight Train
As a software partner, we have developed an Android application that acts as a human-machine interface (HMI) to support the majority of Digital Freight Train functions. The app enables on-site personnel to initiate, monitor, and document key processes, such as automated brake testing, both safely and efficiently. The development process was based on the software development lifecycle phases defined in CENELEC standards, resulting in a robust, highly functional application that can be certified for field operations.
Agile proof of concept for a Driver Assistance System (DAS)
In order to evaluate the potential of mobile assistance systems for train drivers, we implemented a proof of concept (PoC) in an agile project. The main challenge we faced was developing and integrating a complex optimization algorithm into an Android app. This algorithm reacts dynamically to live rail network infrastructure reports and continuously adapts its operating recommendations to the actual track conditions with a view to optimizing energy consumption and punctuality in real time. A functional prototype that demonstrated the technical feasibility of an adaptive, data-driven driver assistance system was produced in a very short time. This proof of concept enabled our client to validate user experience and technical feasibility at an early stage as well as make sound strategic decisions for further product development.
With ITK Engineering, we benefit from a partner who combines deep technical know-how with a clear focus on quality and innovation, consistently delivering outstanding app solutions.
